4 et 5 Ces deux versets stigmatisent l'observance extérieure des rites, que l'on poussait même jusqu'à l'exagération, mais qui était dépourvue du sentiment moral qui aurait pu la rendre agréable à Dieu. Le discours cesse de s'adresser aux femmes ; le ton est celui de l'ironie.

Et péchez. Ces mots ne se rapportent pas, d'après l'ensemble du passage au sacrifice lui-même offert à Béthel, mais aux actes d'intempérance et d'impureté qui accompagnaient les sacrifices offerts au veau d'or.

Guilgal : sanctuaire semblable à celui de Béthel, aussi dans le royaume des dix tribus ; compatez Osée 4.15, note ; Osée 9.15.

Amenez chaque matin : Accompagnez scrupuleusement la partie cérémonielle de vos devoirs religieux.

Tous les trois jours vos dîmes. Deutéronome 14.28 ; 26.12, il est parlé d'une dîme qui doit se payer tous les trois ans, et Lévitique 27.30 et suivants d'une dîme annuelle. Les Israélites les plus scrupuleux en étaient venus, semble-t-il, à payer certaines dîmes tous les trois jours. Mais que leur servait aux yeux de Dieu cet excès de zèle, s'ils y joignaient une vie de péché ! Comparez le reproche de Jésus aux scribes et aux pharisiens, Matthieu 23.23.

En écartant le levain. L'hébreu permet de traduire, comme plusieurs l'ont fait, : avec le levain, c'est-à-dire en violant, la défense de présenter à Dieu des gâteaux d'offrande renfermant du levain (Lévitique 2.11). Mais le contexte exige que l'on traduise au contraire : en écartant avec soin tout levain, faisant la chose dans toutes les règles.
