Si l'on prend cette expression à la lettre, il faut y voir une hyperbole.

"Mais l'apôtre veut surtout ici désigner l'Evangile comme un trésor appartenant à l'humanité tout entière, et qui, par conséquent, devait parvenir aussi aux Colossiens. Il est parvenu jusqu'à vous, aussi bien qu'au monde entier, selon sa destination. La raison pour laquelle saint Paul fait ressortir ici l'universalité du salut et y revient encore à la fin de ce chapitre, (versets 23-27) déclarant qu'il avertit tout homme et enseigne tout homme, c'est qu'il veut dès l'abord faire opposition au particularisme des faux docteurs judaïsants, qui prétendaient borner au peuple juif les bienfaits de l'Evangile. Il ne faut donc pas voir dans ces mots une hyperbole, car l'apôtre, en les écrivant, savait fort bien que l'Evangile n'était point encore, de fait, universellement répandu ; mais il savait aussi que cet Evangile avait dès ses commencements la destination et la puissance de remplir et de dominer le monde ; (comparez Matthieu 24.14) et c'est dans cette assurance que Paul exprime prophétiquement cette destination comme déjà réalisée." Les fruits que porte l'Evangile (Grec : "il fructifie"), ce sont les caractères de la vie chrétienne, la charité, (verset 4) les bonnes œuvres. (verset 10) De plus, l'Evangile augmente, grandit (le texte reçu omet à tort ce mot), soit extérieurement par sa propagation dans le monde, soit dans les âmes qu'il sanctifie. Ce progrès, signe de toute vie, Paul a le bonheur de le trouver dans les Colossiens depuis le jour où ils ont connu la grâce de Dieu en vérité. (verset 5, note.)

L'apôtre emploie un verbe qui désigne une connaissance exacte et il accentue cette nuance en ajoutant en vérité : "vous l'avez connue telle qu'elle est réellement." D'autres traduisent : "vous l'avez vraiment, sincèrement connue." Le premier sens s'accorde mieux avec la préoccupation de l'apôtre de combattre les faux docteurs. (verset 16 suivants ; Colossiens 2.8 suivants)
