J'étais effrayé. Moïse avait déjà reçu l'assurance que Dieu ne détruirait pas le peuple (Exode 32.14). Mais lorsqu'il se trouva lui-même en face du mal commis, il en fut tellement impressionné qu'il éprouva le besoin de recommencer son intercession. Il se tint alors devant Dieu, jeûnant et priant pendant quarante jours pour obtenir non plus seulement la non extermination du peuple, mais l'habitation de Dieu au milieu de lui et le renouvellement de l'alliance qu'il venait de rompre.
