PEUPLE

L'expression hébraïque am haarets est rendue dans nos versions, suivant les cas, par : peuple du pays, populations du pays, gens du pays, habitants du pays, commun peuple.

En dehors de quelques passages où cette expression s'applique, dans un sens général, aux peuples de la terre (Jos 4:24,2Ch 32:19) elle désigne tantôt les éléments non hébreux de la contrée (Ge 23:7-12 et suivant, No 14:9), tantôt les éléments populaires par opposition aux dirigeants israélites (2Ro 24:14, Jer 34:19, Za 7:5 etc.), la foule (Le 20:2,2Ro 21:24, Eze 22:29 etc.), tantôt le peuple d'Israël dans son ensemble (2Ro 11:14,20 21:24,2Ch 26:21 36:1 Jer 37:2 etc.), tantôt enfin la population mi-iuive, mi-païenne que les exilés trouvèrent en Palestine à leur retour de Babylone (Esd 3:3 4:4 9:2 10:2-11, Ne 10:30), et comprenant entre autres des marchands (Ne 10:31).

Dans la langue du N.T., les termes grecs okhlos et plêthos désignent le plus souvent la masse de la population, la multitude (voir ce mot), parfois dans un sentiment méprisant de la part des chefs juifs envers la « populace » (Jn 7:49). Voir aussi Nations, Table des peuples.
