Les versets 3 à 5 renferment la supplication et la promesse de soumission présentées par les Moabites réfugiés en Edom au roi de Juda.

Conseille-nous, sois l'arbitre... Ces mots supposent que Juda est en paix avec l'envahisseur de Moab ; c'est une intervention plutôt pacifique que militaire qu'ils réclament de lui.

Donne nous l'ombre... Cache et protège-nous. Juda devait jouir, au moment où ces paroles furent écrites, d'un grand prestige aux yeux des peuples voisins.
