Après cette digression, Esaïe revient à Tyr. Nébucadnetsar assiégea cette ville pendant treize ans. L'histoire ne dit pas positivement qu'il la prit. Mais cela ressort du passage Ezéchiel 29.17-21 et du témoignage des anciens d'après lequel ce prince soumit toute la Phénicie. Tyr fut dès lors assujétie aux Chaldéens ; c'est de Babylone qu'on lui envoyait ses rois, des princes phéniciens captifs. Il paraît donc que Nébucadnetsar la laissa subsister, ainsi que le fit plus tard Alexandre, qui s'en empara après sept mois de siége. C'est au moyen-âge seulement que Tyr a subi une véritable destruction. Le prophète attribue aux Chaldéens la ruine qu'ils n'ont fait que commencer, et il la décrit comme si elle devait se réaliser d'un seul coup. Dans l'événement qui priva Tyr de son indépendance se concentre à ses yeux la série des catastrophes qui ont consommé sa chute.

      6 Pass over to Tarshish! Wail, you inhabitants of the coast!
      14 Howl, you ships of Tarshish, for your stronghold is laid waste!

      25 The ships of Tarshish were your caravans for your merchandise: and you were replenished, and made very glorious in the heart of the seas.
      26 Your rowers have brought you into great waters: the east wind has broken you in the heart of the seas.
      27 Your riches, and your wares, your merchandise, your mariners, and your pilots, your repairers of ship seams, and the dealers in your merchandise, and all your men of war, who are in you, with all your company which is in the midst of you, shall fall into the heart of the seas in the day of your ruin.

      17 For in an hour such great riches are made desolate.' Every shipmaster, and everyone who sails anywhere, and mariners, and as many as gain their living by sea, stood far away,
      18 and cried out as they looked at the smoke of her burning, saying, 'What is like the great city?'
      19 They cast dust on their heads, and cried, weeping and mourning, saying, 'Woe, woe, the great city, in which all who had their ships in the sea were made rich by reason of her great wealth!' For in one hour is she made desolate.
