10 et 11 Le poids de vingt sicles équivaut à 320 grammes ; c'est à peu près la moitié de ce qui est nécessaire la nourriture d'un homme, même dans les climats chauds où l'on mange moins que dans les nôtres.

Un sixième de hin représente une contenance d'un peu moins d'un litre (le hin équivaut à cinq litres) ou, comme disent les rabbins, celle de douze œufs de poule. Cette ration quotidienne, déjà si restreinte, ne devait être prise que par intervalles et à petites portions, de sorte que le rassasiement ne fût jamais complet : image des temps de pénurie par où passera le peuple jusqu'à ce que Dieu lui ait pardonné son péché.
