1 à 2 : Le chaos

Ces deux versets indiquent l'acte et l'état primitifs qui ont servi de point de départ à l'œuvre ordonnatrice d'où est tiré l'univers tel que nous le contemplons actuellement.

Il n'y a pas de raisons pour admettre la construction d'après laquelle le verset 1 formerait une proposition subordonnée, suivie du verset 2 comme parenthèse, et dont la principale se trouverait au verset 3 ; dans ce sens : Au commencement, quand Dieu créa les cieux et la terre (or la terre était déserte et vide...), Dieu dit...

Le style de tout ce document est plus simple, et des faits aussi importants que ceux qui sont mentionnés au verset 2 ne pourraient être mis en parenthèse. Le verset 1 forme donc une proposition indépendante.

Le mot Bereschit (Au commencement ) n'est pas ici, comme d'ordinaire, suivi d'un complément, parce qu'il désigne le commencement absolu (comparez Jean 1.1 ). C'est le commencement du temps, aussi bien que de tous les êtres qui se développent dans le temps.

Dieu : en hébreu Elohim, nom dérivé d'une racine arabe, aliah, qui signifie trembler ; c'est donc l'être devant lequel on tremble, l'être souverainement redoutable. Comparez une expression analogue : la frayeur d'Isaac dans Genèse 31.42,53. Il ne paraît pas y avoir de rapport entre ce nom et celui de El, qui vient de la racine oul, être fort. Le nom Elohim est le pluriel de Eloah, qui se trouve dans certains morceaux poétiques ( Job 12.6 ; 35.10 ; Habakuk 1.11 ; Deutéronome 32.15 ; Psaumes 50.22 ) et dans l'hébreu postérieur ( Daniel 11.37-39 ; 2Chroniques 32.15 ; Néhémie 9.17 ).

Les pères de l'Eglise ont vu dans ce pluriel une allusion à la pluralité des personnes divines (comparez verset 26) : mais ce mot est emprunté par l'auteur biblique au langage ordinaire. On pourrait plutôt y voir un vestige du polythéisme régnant ce que confirmeraient deux passages où ce nom est construit avec le verbe au pluriel (Genèse 20.13 ; 35.7). En tous cas, si même cette supposition était fondée, le verbe au singulier (bara ; créa ) qui accompagne ici ce sujet, suffirait pour montrer que l'auteur emploie ce terme dans un sens monothéiste et que, s'il attache encore une valeur au nombre pluriel, il l'applique à la pluralité des perfections redoutables de l'Etre suprême. Quant à l'idée d'un pluriel de majesté, elle est sans appui dans l'Ancien Testament.

Créa. Le mot hébreu bara, que nous traduisons ainsi, signifie primitivement tailler et n'implique pas nécessairement, comme notre mot créer, l'absence de toute matière déjà existante : mais il faut observer que les idées abstraites ne peuvent être énoncées dans le langage humain qu'au moyen de termes exprimant des notions sensibles ; puis, quand ce verbe désigne une action exercée sur une matière existante, il se met à une autre forme (pihel, béré ) et a pour sujet un être humain et pour régime la matière même sur laquelle le travail s'exerce (Josué 17.15), tandis que dans la forme employée ici (kal) il a toujours pour sujet Dieu et pour régime le mot qui désigne le résultat de l'action accomplie (Esaïe 43.1).

Du reste l'hébreu a d'autres expressions pour désigner l'action de Dieu sur une matière existante : asa, faire (versets 7, 16, etc.), jatsar, former (2.7). Sur le rapport entre créer et faire, voir encore à 2.3. Mis en relation, comme il l'est ici, avec l'idée de commencement, ce mot ne peut désigner que la formation même de la matière ; autrement il faudrait admettre que, dans la pensée de l'auteur, le chaos est apparu de lui-même ou qu'il est éternel, deux suppositions qui seraient évidemment contraires à l'intuition de tout le récit.

Les cieux. Le mot hébreu Schamaïm provient d'une racine arabe désignant l'élévation. Le pluriel fait allusion aux nombreux espaces célestes qui se superposent les uns aux autres. (Comparez 1Rois 8.27, les cieux des cieux ; 2Corinthiens 12.2, le troisième ciel ). Il sera parlé dans ce qui suit du ciel des oiseaux et du ciel des astres, au-dessus desquels Dieu habite dans son ciel invisible. Les cieux et la terre : l'univers. Dieu posa la matière d'où l'univers fut ensuite formé.

On pourrait assez naturellement penser que ce premier verset est le titre de la narration qui va suivre dans ce chapitre. Mais il faudrait dans ce cas donner au mot créer les deux sens simultanés et différents de produire et d'arranger, ce qui n'est pas naturel ; et surtout nous voyons immédiatement après, au verset 2, que la matière terrestre existe déjà réellement, puisque l'Esprit de Dieu agit sur elle ; le fait de sa création doit donc être renfermé dans le verset 1. Cela s'applique non seulement à la matière de la terre, mais aussi à celle des cieux ; car l'œuvre du quatrième jour en suppose également l'existence.

Le verset 1 est donc l'indication d'un fait positif qui a précédé l'organisation progressive de l'univers. Ce fait ne peut être que celui par lequel Dieu a posé la matière d'où sont procédés les cieux et la terre actuels (voir 2.4).

On a supposé parfois que le verset 1 renfermait l'idée d'une création complète, achevée et parfaite, qui aurait été détruite par un cataclysme résultant de la révolte des anges, et auquel aurait succédé le chaos décrit au verset 2. L'œuvre des six jours serait ainsi un travail de restauration, non de création proprement dite. On a allégué en faveur de cette opinion le terme tohou vabohou du verset 2, qui indiquerait un désordre résultant d'une destruction, un état anormal qui, pense-t-on, ne peut être sorti tel quel des mains du Créateur.

Les partisans de cette hypothèse expliquent ainsi les imperfections du monde actuel, qui seraient les restes de ce bouleversement primitif. Nous ne saurions démonter l'impossibilité de cette hypothèse, mais nous ne croyons pourtant pas que le texte conduise naturellement à une telle idée ; la liaison entre les versets 1 et 2 paraît trop immédiate ; le sens naturel est : Dieu créa, et de cet acte divin sortit l'état de choses suivant (verset 2). L'idée d'un commencement du monde exprimée par notre verset est pleinement confirmée par l'étude de la nature, qui prouve qu'il y a eu sur la terre une succession d'êtres allant du plus imparfait au plus parfait, et qu'il y a eu même une époque où aucun être organique n'existait. Si le monde n'avait pas eu de commencement, ce progrès ne serait pas possible. Dans un monde éternel il n'y aurait pas de succession : l'univers serait achevé aussitôt que commencé.

« Genèse » est un nom tiré du grec, il signifie « le livre de la création, ou de la réalisation » ; ce titre est correctement traduit car l'ouvrage contient le récit de l'origine de toutes choses. C'est le plus ancien livre historique. Aucun autre livre sur l'antiquité ne conteste son autorité ; la plupart des choses enregistrées par plusieurs auteurs païens des plus anciens, ainsi que les différentes coutumes des nations, confirment ce qui est compté dans le livre de la Genèse.

Le premier verset de la Bible nous donne une explication rationnelle et utile des origines de la terre et des cieux. Les chrétiens réellement humbles, grâce à leur foi, sont mieux à même de comprendre ces choses, plus que ne le peuvent, par leur imagination, les hommes les plus instruits.

Ce que nous pouvons voir du ciel et de la terre, nous fait découvrir la puissance du grand Créateur. Au vu, ici-bas, de notre condition humaine, nous devons garder à l'esprit notre devoir de chrétiens : lever toujours les yeux vers le ciel, et garder la terre sous nos pieds. Le Fils de Dieu, ne faisant qu'un avec le Père, était avec Celui-ci, lors de la création du monde ; qui plus est, on nous dit, dans Sa Parole, que le monde a été fait par Lui, et que rien n'a été fait sans Lui. Ah, quelles nobles pensées devrions-nous avoir au sujet de ce grand Dieu que nous adorons, ce grand Médiateur vers qui nous adressons nos prières ! Et ici, dès le début du Saint Livre, nous lisons, au sujet de cet esprit divin, qu'Il travaille dans le cœur de l'homme ; ce type d'action est d'ailleurs souvent mentionné dans d'autres passages de la bible. Il faut remarquer qu'au début, il n'y avait rien d'enviable sur la surface terrestre car le monde d'alors était informe et vide ; tout n'était que désolation. De manière imagée, l'œuvre effectuée par la grâce, dans l'âme, est aussi une création nouvelle : dans une âme « en friche », là où il n'y a pas eu de nouvelle naissance, on ne peut trouver que désordre, confusion et tout ce qui concerne le mal ; cette âme est vide de tout ce qui concerne le bien, de tout contexte divin ; on n'y trouve que l'obscurité car il n'y a en elle que ténèbres : c'est ici notre état naturel, avant que la Grâce toute puissante ne produise en nous Son changement.
