C'est au moment où l'on circoncisait l'enfant qu'on lui donnait son nom (Luc 1.59 ; 2.21). Dieu introduit ici cet usage en changeant le nom d'Abraham au moment de l'institution de ce rite. Ce nom nouveau signifie père d'une multitude et indique ce qui sera désormais son caractère particulier.
