21.22-34 Alliance d'Abraham avec Abimélék

Comme le chapitre 14, ce morceau nous présente le patriarche dans ses relations avec les princes, ses voisins. De même que les morceaux qui précèdent, ce trait appartient à l'histoire du développement de sa foi. Car il est probable que la propriété de ces puits dans le sol de Canaan était pour lui, comme plus tard l'achat de la caverne de Macpéla, une prise de possession anticipée de la terre que Dieu lui avait promise.

En ce temps-là : pendant qu'Abraham habitait à Béerséba.

Avec Picol. Comme il s'agit d'une alliance, Abimélek se fait accompagner d'un témoin. Abraham ne portait pas le titre de roi et n'avait pas d'armée organisée ; néanmoins il était assez puissant pour qu'Abimélek désirât l'avoir pour allié.

Dieu est avec toi... Abimélek a tiré cette conclusion de la prospérité dont jouit Abraham.

Tu ne tromperas... Abimélek avait assurément des raisons de se défier de la véracité d'Abraham (chapitre 20).

J'ai agi avec bonté. Quoique offensé par Abraham, Abimélek lui avait fait des présents et avait mis tout son pays à sa disposition (20.14-16).

Abimélec était persuadé que les promesses divines faites à Abraham allaient s'accomplir. Il est sage d'être en relation avec les personnes bénies par Dieu ; nous devrions aussi être reconnaissants envers ceux qui nous ont manifesté leur affection. Les puits d'eau sont rares et précieux dans ces contrées désertiques. Abraham pris soin de donner un nom bien spécifique à ce puits (Beer Schéba, puits du serment), dans le soucis de prévenir toute dispute à l'avenir. On ne peut rien espérer de mieux chez un honnête homme que ce choix de la droiture dans ce contexte délicat. Abraham était maintenant en bon terme avec le voisinage, il séjourna un long moment dans ce pays. Il a non seulement pratiqué sa religion, mais de plus, il a témoigné de sa foi aux autres. Il a invoqué le nom du Seigneur, le Dieu d'Éternité ; Il se peut qu'il ait planté ce tamaris sur le lieu où il a adressé sa prière à Dieu. Il n'a pas caché son attitude d'adoration aux autres, les invitant, par là même, à l'imiter. Les hommes pieux devraient tout faire pour inciter les autres à s'approcher de Dieu. Quel que soit le lieu où nous nous trouvons, nous ne devons éprouver aucune honte à adorer l'Éternel.
