Les tables, dont il est ici question, sont sans doute des tableaux de bois ou de pierre sur lesquels le prophète devra graver soigneusement les paroles de l'oracle et qu'il exposera ensuite aux yeux du peuple, afin que tous en puissent prendre connaissance. Le mot employé (luchoth) rappelle les tables de la loi (Exode 34.28). L'intention de l'ordre donné au prophète est évidente : il faut que la promesse divine soit connue de chacun, pour qu'elle ne s'altère ni ne se perde, et qu'elle puisse, pendant les jours de l'épreuve, entretenir dans les cœurs le courage et l'espoir.
