Hébreux 12.6

Proverbes 3.11, d'après les Septante.

Il y a dans l'hébreu : "Car celui que l'Eternel aime, il le frappe, et cela comme un père le fils qu'il chérit." Comparer Apocalypse 3.19.

- Ces paroles présentent les afflictions sous leur jour le plus consolant. (Comparer Romains 5.3 ; 8.28)

Sans doute, la souffrance est dans notre humanité un effet du péché, un châtiment que Dieu inflige dans sa justice ; mais pour ceux qui, en Christ, sont devenus des fils de Dieu, elle se transforme en un signe de l'amour du Père. (Hébreux 12.7-10)

Le sentiment de cet amour ôte à la souffrance son aiguillon, l'amertume et la malédiction du péché. La croix que nous portons avec Christ, et qui nous rend semblables à lui, (Philippiens 3.10) est une preuve spéciale de la grâce. Par elle, Dieu consomme ses enfants de la manière dont Jésus fut consommé. (Comparer Hébreux 2.10 ; 5.9)

Tel est le sens de cette image d'un père qui corrige son fils, tout en l'aimant, et parce qu il l'aime.

Nous traduisons par corriger et correction, les termes que d'autres rendent par châtier et châtiment, parce qu'ils impliquent l'idée d'une action pédagogique exercée par Dieu.

      7 It is for discipline that you endure. God deals with you as with children, for what son is there whom his father doesn't discipline?
      8 But if you are without discipline, of which all have been made partakers, then are you illegitimate, and not children.
