Grec : Avant qu'Abraham devint, naquit à l'existence, moi, je suis.

Le devenir appartient à tout ce qui est créé ; l'être absolu, éternel, appartient à Dieu seul, et c'est dans ce sens que Jésus Christ parle ici. (Comparer verset 24, note.)

Il faut bien remarquer ce présent : je suis ; Jésus ne dit pas : j'étais, comme le voudrait la grammaire et comme traduit Ostervald, pour lui, le temps n'existe pas. Cette grande vérité de sa préexistence éternelle, Jésus l'affirme solennellement, en présence de ses ennemis, comme il l'exprimera en parlant à Dieu son Père, dans sa dernière prière. (Jean 17.5)

C'est donc de la bouche même de son Maître que Jean à tiré l'idée sublime de son prologue. (Jean 1.1)

- Il est tristement instructif de voir les efforts d'imagination que faisait l'ancien socinianisme, et que font encore aujourd'hui bien des théologiens, pour échapper à la vérité révélée par ces paroles.
