Jérémie 3.1

La traduction littérale du premier mot de ce verset est : En disant. Quelues interprètes ont rattaché ce mot à la dernière phrase du chapitre 2 : L'Eternel a rejeté ceux... en disant. Nous pensons plutôt que Jérémie cite ici un point de droit, en le reproduisant exactement tel qu'il était formulé par les docteurs juifs, pour en faire ensuite l'application dans le sens spirituel. Le prophète fait allusion à la loi du divorce donnée Deutéronome 24.1-4.

Tu reviendrais vers moi ! Ces mots ne signifient pas qu'Israël est trop corrompu pour se convertir, mais qu'il est trop coupable pour être reçu de nouveau en grâce. Le châtiment doit cette fois s'exécuter jusqu'au bout. Ce second sens est seul d'accord avec l'exemple tiré de la loi.

Dans le repentir, il est bon de se remémorer les péchés dont nous avons été coupables, ainsi que le contexte dans lequel ils ont été commis, avec les diverses relations douteuses que nous avons pu entretenir.

Avec quelle douceur l'Éternel avait corrigé Son peuple ! Les âmes repentantes ne doivent pas oublier qu'elles s'adressent en fait à Dieu, et non pas à l'homme. Elles peuvent tenir ces propos : « me tiendras-tu rigueur de mes actes ou de mes paroles accomplis jusqu'à présent ? Ta grâce pourra-t-elle tout surmonter » ? La réponse divine est-alors la suivante : « maintenant le pardon est proclamé, pourquoi n'en bénéficierais-tu pas » ?

Les enfants d'Israël se devaient d'espérer et de trouver en Dieu la tendre compassion qu'éprouve un Père, face au retour de Son fils prodigue. Ils viendront à Lui, en tant que Guide de leur jeunesse : cette dernière a en effet bien besoin d'être guidée !

Les pécheurs repentants peuvent être encouragés à la pensée que la colère divine à leur égard, ne durera pas éternellement. L'ensemble des Miséricordes de Dieu a toujours encouragé les âmes, en tous temps ; que pourrait-il être plus souhaitable pour les jeunes, que d'avoir le Seigneur comme Père et comme Guide ?

Que les parents puissent activement diriger leurs enfants à rechercher ce type de bénédiction !

      42 The voice of a multitude being at ease was with her: and with men of the common sort were brought drunkards from the wilderness; and they put bracelets on their hands [twain], and beautiful crowns on their heads.
      43 Then I said of her who was old in adulteries, Now will they play the prostitute with her, and she [with them].
      44 They went in to her, as they go in to a prostitute: so went they in to Oholah and to Oholibah, the lewd women.
      45 Righteous men, they shall judge them with the judgment of adulteresses, and with the judgment of women who shed blood; because they are adulteresses, and blood is in their hands.
