Les hauteurs nues : les théâtres de l'idolâtrie, choisis peut-être pour pouvoir mieux consulter les présages (Osée 4.13). Les images employées dans ce verset sont d'une crudité à peine traduisible dans notre langue. Les auteurs sacrés n'ont jamais redouté le mot propre, car ils savaient que toutes choses sont pures à celui qui est pur, et qu'il faut quelquefois choquer l'oreille pour atteindre la conscience. Encore ici l'idolâtrie est identifiée avec l'impureté.

Tu les attendais sur les routes. De même qu'une prostituée ou le bédouin du désert attend le passant au bord du chemin, l'une pour séduire, l'autre pour piller, Israël avait établi des autels idolâtres à tous les coins de rue et à toutes les portes (2Rois 23.8 ; Ezéchiel 16.25). Seulement il ne faut pas presser la comparaison : Israël est à la fois la courtisane et le passant, le séducteur et le séduit.
