Jérémie 8.13

Je les ôterai entièrement, dit l'Éternel. Il n'y a pas de raisins sur la vigne, et pas de figues sur le figuier, et la feuille est flétrie ; et je les livrerai à ceux qui passeront sur eux.

Avec ce verset commence la section prophétique (haphthare) que les Juifs lisent dans leurs synagogues au jour anniversaire des deux ruines de Jérusalem. Elle va jusqu'à 9.23.

Les mots : plus de raisins au cep, doivent sans doute se prendre au sens figuré. Cette image décrit la stérilité morale du peuple, qui provoque le jugement de l'Eternel. Comparez la parabole du figuier stérile, Luc 13.6-9.

Les derniers mots du verset, très elliptiques, ont été entendus de différentes manières. Voici les deux principales ; la première : Je leur ai donné (des commandements) et ils les transgressent ; la seconde (conforme à la traduction adoptée) : Je leur ai donné des ennemis qui traverseront leur pays.
Ce dernier sens nous paraît préparer mieux ce qui va suivre.
