L'opprobre de l'Egypte. Cette expression se comprendrait aisément si l'on supposait que l'usage de la circoncision avait été généralement mis en oubli durant le séjour du peuple en Egypte. Mais cette sa supposition est impossible, en raison de la célébration de la Pâque qui avait eu lieu au Sinaï (voir verset 5). Le trait raconté Exode 4.24-26 prouve également que la circoncision n'était point tombée en désuétude, bien qu'on ait voulu conclure de ce fait le contraire. Il faut sans doute entendre par l'opprobre d'Egypte la disposition à l'idolâtrie et à l'immoralité qu'avait constamment manifestée Israël depuis sa sortie et envisager la circoncision qui vient d'avoir lieu comme le symbole du renouvellement complet du peuple, après un long temps durant lequel il a vécu comme étranger en pays païen.
