Celle que Matthieu appelle simplement une femme, était Marie, sœur de Lazare, (Jean 12.3) qui, ayant depuis longtemps ouvert toute son âme à la parole et à l'amour du Sauveur, (Luc 10.39) saisit avec empressement cette dernière occasion de lui témoigner sa vénération. Elle lui fait le sacrifice de ce qu'elle avait de plus grand prix, comme elle lui avait consacré son cœur et sa vie.

En Orient, oindre ainsi la tête de quelque personnage éminent qu'on recevait comme hôte dans sa maison, était un témoignage de la plus haute distinction dont on pût l'honorer.
