Baptiser signifie plonger, et cet acte avait lieu dans le fleuve du Jourdain.

Le baptême de Jean n'était emprunté ni aux ablutions en usage parmi les Juifs de l'époque Jean 2.6 ; 3.25, ni au baptême des prosélytes, qui n'apparaît qu'après la destruction du temple c'était une institution nouvelle, prélude du baptême chrétien, et dont l'idée première était indiquée par des promesses de Dieu relatives à la nouvelle alliance, telles que Ezéchiel 36.25-27 Il constituait une déclaration symbolique du péché et de la corruption de tout le peuple, aussi bien que de la nécessité de la purification et de la régénération de l'homme tout entier. (Comparer Romains 6.3-6, notes.) Ce dernier trait était symbolisé par l'action de plonger dans l'eau ceux qui déclaraient leur repentance en confessant leurs péchés.

La confession des péchés était faite, chez les Israélites, au jour des expiations. Lévitique 16.21 Elle était regardée comme la condition du pardon de Dieu. Psaumes 32.3-5 ; Psaumes 51.4,5

- Le baptême de Jean était un baptême pour la repentance, auquel manquait l'élément essentiel du baptême chrétien : le pardon des péchés et la vie nouvelle. (verset 11, note.)
