Avant tout, la foi du paralytique, mais aussi la foi de ceux qui le lui apportaient et qui montraient ainsi que déjà cette foi était "opérante par la charité." C'était là la préparation nécessaire à la guérison et au pardon.

D'abord des paroles pleines de compassion et d'encouragement : Prends courage, mon enfant. (Comparer Matthieu 9.22,Marc 10.49) Puis, un bienfait infiniment plus grand pour le malade que la guérison qu'il venait demander : Tes péchés sont pardonnés (grec remis). Le texte reçu porte : "te sont pardonnés," ce qui s'entend de soi-même.

Mais ce qu'il faut remarquer c'est le verbe au présent, selon le vrai texte, qui montre le pardon accordé actuellement par Jésus-Christ et sans condition aucune. Pour que ce pardon absolu fut moralement possible et vrai, il fallait que Jésus vit dans cet homme la repentance aussi bien que la foi. Cependant celte parole de Grâce, adressée à un malade qui venait chercher la guérison, surprend au premier abord. On a conclu de là que le malade avait lui-même causé son mal par ses péchés, ou que Jésus s'accommodait à l'idée juive de son temps que toute souffrance est le châtiment de péchés personnels. (Voir le contraire dans Jean 9.2,3)

Il est possible que ce paralytique se fût attiré sa maladie par ses égarements, mais rien dans le récit ne l'indique. Seulement il est certain, selon l'Ecriture, que tout mal dans le monde émane du péché, (Romains 5.12) et Jésus, en accordant d'abord le pardon, guérit la cause, le péché, avant d'ôter l'effet, la maladie.
