Ne point glorifier Dieu comme Dieu, ne point lui rendre grâces, ne pas lui donner son cœur dans une reconnaissance vivante et une entière consécration, c'est, pour l'homme, manquer le but de son être et outrager son Créateur. Par là, il se dérobe à Dieu, à qui il appartient, et se livre à une idolâtrie grossière ou raffinée. Cet éloignement de Dieu est le péché, source de tous les péchés.

- Les hommes sont devenus vains dans leurs pensées ou leurs "raisonnements" (mot pris en un sens défavorable dans le Nouveau Testament), c'est-à-dire, ils se sont attachés à ces "choses vaines" que les idoles étaient aux yeux des Juifs (Actes 14.15 ; comparez Jérémie 2.5. où se lit dans les Septante la même expression que dans notre passage).

Leur cœur, siège de toute la vie de l'esprit, de l'entendement comme des affections, s'est enveloppé de ténèbres, a été obscurci. Il ne reste dès lors plus rien de sain en l'homme.
