1 Timothée 4.1-16

Segond 21 C’est dans cette perspective en effet que nous travaillons et que nous nous laissons insulter, parce que nous avons mis notre espérance dans le Dieu vivant qui est le Sauveur de tous les hommes, et en particulier des croyants.

World English Bible For to this end we both labor and suffer reproach, because we have set our trust in the living God, who is the Savior of all men, especially of those who believe.

Cette parole certaine (1Timothée 4.9 ; comparez 1Timothée 1.15, note ; 1Timothée 3.1), c'est la vérité exprimée à 1Timothée 4.8 concernant la vrai piété, et cette vérité est confirmée par 1Timothée 4.10.

En effet, si le fidèle endure ici-bas tant de travaux ou même d'outrages, c'est parce qu'il a mis sa confiance dans le Dieu vivant, en d'autres termes, parce qu'il est soutenu par une vraie piété. (1Timothée 4.7,8)

Cette piété est l'âme de sa vie, l'espérance de sa délivrance finale, sur laquelle Paul jette ici un regard, en appelant le Dieu vivant son Sauveur.

Dieu, dans un sens, est bien le Sauveur de tous les hommes, puisque Christ est mort pour tous, que Dieu veut le salut de tous (1Timothée 2.4) et qu'il leur donne ici-bas le temps de sa patience pour se convertir. Mais il est, dans un sens tout spécial, le Sauveur des croyants, qui, par la foi, ont embrassé déjà son salut, et attendent de lui leur entière rédemption.
