World English Bible However God's firm foundation stands, having this seal, "The Lord knows those who are his," and, "Let every one who names the name of the Lord depart from unrighteousness."

Il peut bien arriver, et il arrive malheureusement toujours, que l'erreur "renverse la foi de quelques-uns ;" (2Timothée 2.18) mais le solide fondement que Dieu lui-même a posé et sur lequel repose la foi de l'Eglise ne peut jamais être ébranlé ; il se retrouve debout après toutes les tempêtes.

Ce fondement, quel est-il ? On a fait à cette question diverses réponses ; il n'y en a qu'une à faire et qui est de l'apôtre lui-même : C'est Jésus-Christ et l'Evangile de sa grâce. (1Corinthiens 3.11 ; Ephésiens 2.20)

On grave sur les monuments des inscriptions qui en marquent la destination, qui en sont le sceau : "l'inébranlable fondement de Dieu" porte aussi les deux inscriptions significatives que Paul cite ici.

La première nous rappelle que cette triste confusion de la vérité et de l'erreur, des justes et des impies, qui souvent afflige notre âme et ébranle notre foi, n'existe pas pur Dieu : il connaît les siens, (Nombres 16.5 ; Jean 10.14) et il saura les préserver de tout mal pour la vie éternelle.

La seconde établit la règle infaillible d'après laquelle nous pouvons juger et de nous-mêmes et des autres : Quiconque invoque le nom du Seigneur, le reconnaît pour son Sauveur, fait profession de lui appartenir, et ne se retire pas de l'injustice, se séduit lui-même (1Jean 1.6 ; comparez Esaïe 52.11) La première de ces sentences est propre à rassurer le croyant, la seconde à produire une crainte salutaire.
