Car, à ce que je vois, tu es rempli d’amertume et de méchanceté et tu en récolteras les fruits amers : tu es enlisé dans le mal et ligoté par le péché.

Grec : que tu es tombé dans un fiel d'amertume et un lien d'iniquité, c'est à dire dans un esprit d'amertume, de méchanceté, d'opposition à la vérité, qui est comme le fiel, et dans une iniquité morale, qui constitue un ensemble de chaînes dont tu es lié.

Les anciens considéraient le fiel comme une image du poison, et quelques exégètes entendent ce mot comme si Pierre disait : Tu es moralement empoisonné.

Meyer voit plutôt dans cette amertume du fiel l'image de la haine contre l'Evangile. (Comparer Romains 3.14 ; Ephésiens 4.31) Cette interprétation nous paraît plus naturelle.
