ASIE

Dans le N.T. ce mot ne désigne jamais la « partie du monde » de ce nom ; c'est toujours la province romaine d'Asie proconsulaire, l'une des plus importantes et des plus riches de l'empire, célèbre en particulier par ses laines, ses toiles, ses teintureries. (cf. Ap 3:4-18) Elle comprenait l'extrême O. de l'Asie Mineure actuelle, limité par la Bithynie (N. -E.), la Galatie (E.), la Pamphylie jet la Lycie (S. -E.) et par la mer Egée (O.), où telle possédait quelques îles. Les Romains l'avaient conquise en 133 av. J. -C ; au temps de l'apôtre Paul, elle était gouvernée par un proconsul aidé de trois légats (délégués), et qui séjourna soit à Pergame, (cf. Ap 2:13) soit à Ephèse. Elle réunissait la Mysie, la Lydie, la Carie et en partie la Phrygie. Ses villes principales étaient Éphèse, Smyrne et Pergame.

L'Asie fut christianisée de bonne heure, grâce surtout à l'activité missionnaire de l'apôtre Paul (Ac 16:6 19:10,22,26,27,1Co 16:9 2Co 1:8 2Ti 1:15,1Pi 1:1)

L'ép. de Paul aux Éphésiens était probablement une lettre circulaire adressée à toutes les Églises d'Asie. C'est à sept d'entre elles qu'est adressée ensuite l'Apocalypse de saint Jean (Ap 1:4-11). L'Église d'Éphèse devint un des principaux centres de l'influence chrétienne aux premiers siècles.
