ÉDIT

Ordonnance prise par un souverain (nos versions disent quelques fois : décret ; voir ce mot).

Les plus connus sont : celui du Pharaon contre les nouveau-nés hébreux (Heb 11:23, cf. Ex 1:22) ; celui de Cyrus pour la libération d'Israël captif et la reconstruction du temple de Jérusalem (2Ch 36:22 et suivant, Esd 1:1 5:17 6:3) et ceux de Darius puis d'Artaxerxès pour confirmer le précédent (Esd 6:12 7:11 et suivants) ; ceux que le livre d'Esther attribue à Assuérus, le premier contre les Juifs, le second pour eux (Est 3:12 4:8 8:8 et suivants) ; ceux que le livre de Daniel attribue à Nébucadnetsar, puis à Darius (Da 3:10,28 6:7) ; enfin l'édit de recensement publié au nom de César Auguste (Lu 2:1), et les édits impériaux interdisant toute proclamation de royauté non reconnue à Rome (Ac 17:7).

Le mot grec dogma employé dans ces deux derniers cas, et qui devait revêtir dans l'histoire de l'Église le sens de décision doctrinale (dogme ; voir ce mot), était en effet un terme romain, impliquant que l'auteur de l'édit est une autorité lointaine mais absolue.

On en a trouvé un en Egypte, du III e ou IV e siècle, rendu sans doute par Alexandre Sévère, et relatif au trésor de la couronne : « Que les gouverneurs des diverses villes fassent afficher des exemplaires de mon présent édit dans les lieux les plus publics, en pleine vue de ceux qui veulent lire ! » Enfin Ac 18:2 fait allusion au célèbre édit de Claude expulsant les Juifs de Rome.
