RUINE

Ce mot, fréquent dans le langage biblique, comporte quelques nuances.

1. Le fait matériel de l'écroulement d'un bâtiment ou d'une ville, de la destruction d'un pays ravagé ; c'est le sens étymologique du mot français, et le plus habituel'dans la Bible (Jos 8:28,2Ro 19:25, Jer 25:12, Bar 4:33 etc.).

2. La signification est plus étendue : défaite, insuccès, même la mort. (2Ch 22:7, Esa 1:28 10:3, Da 9:27 11:17, Os 13:9, Am 5:9, Ab 1:13,1Th 5:3,2Pi 2:1)

3. Parfois l'idée dominante est celle d'humiliation (Job 31:3, Ps 35:8, Pr 6:15 10:14-15-29 13:6 16:18 18:7-12).

4. Les applications morales du mot correspondent à ces différents sens : la ruine, c'est alors l'écroulement de l'individu, la débâcle de sa vie spirituelle (Ps 1:6, Esa 59:7, Mt 7:27, Ro 3:16,1Ti 6:9,2Ti 2:14,2Pi 2:3 3:16). C'est à 2Ti 2:14 qu'est empruntée l'expression « ruine et perdition » mise par Calvin dans la Confession des péchés, et que certaines liturgies ont modernisée en « condamnation et mort ».

5. Enfin, en deux passages du N. T (2Th 1:9 2Pi 1:7)., le mot ruine désigne la perdition éternelle (voir Perdition).
