Vous dites... Ils ne parlent pas ainsi ouvertement. Esaïe interprète et dévoile leurs secrètes pensées, que Dieu connaît.

Nous avons fait un pacte... Ils se flattent d'échapper à l'ennemi aussi sûrement que s'ils eussent un contrat en forme avec la mort elle-même.

Le fléau débordant : l'Assyrien envahissant, comme 8.7-8.

Passera. Si même l'ennemi vient à traverser la Palestine, ils comptent lui échapper encore, comme jusqu'ici. Ce verset fait peut-être allusion au pacte conclu jadis par Achaz avec l'Assyrie, par lequel Jérusalem espérait éviter le sort de Samarie, ou plus probablement à l'alliance que Juda se préparait à conclure secrètement avec l'Egypte contre l'Assyrie, dont il était tributaire. C'est à cette politique tortueuse que s'appliquent les termes de mensonge et de fraude. Tout en les faisant parler, Esaïe appelle les choses par leur vrai nom. Mais toutes ces ruses ne les sauveront pas. Comparez 29.15 ; 30.12.
