Mais comment Israël se justifierait-il ? Toute son histoire, dès son origine, n'est qu'une suite de péchés

Ton premier père. Qui est désigné par ces mots ? Il ne s'agit pas d'Abraham (41.8 ; 51.2), auquel l'infidélité envers Dieu n'est jamais reprochée. Il serait plus naturel de penser à Jacob (58.14), dont le nom revient constamment dans notre prophétie et dont les fautes ne purent être pardonnées qu'à la suite de son humiliation et de ses larmes (Osée 12.3-5). Il serait le premier père du peuple d'Israël, en opposition aux patriarches, pères des douze tribus. Mais on n'aperçoit ainsi aucun rapport entre les termes évidemment parallèles des deux parties du verset : le premier père et les interprètes. Un autre sens est préférable. Les pères d'Israël sont les souverains sacrificateurs qui se sont succédé à la tête du peuple ; et le premier d'entre eux est Aaron, dont le péché fut si sévèrement puni par l'Eternel (Nombres 20.23-28). Les interprètes sont les prêtres et les Lévites, dépositaires officiels de la loi, qui furent en Israël les hommes de la lettre, les représentants habituels du formalisme (quand ils n'étaient pas ceux de l'idolâtrie ; Exode 32.1-35) en opposition aux prophètes, les hommes de l'Esprit.
