L'image dont se sert le prophète, est celle-ci : Sur les tours de Sion, encore déserte, se tiennent des sentinelles qui attendent l'apparition de Dieu et le retour des captifs qu'il ramènera. Elles voient sur les hauteurs voisines accourir les messagers, précurseurs du Roi céleste (verset 7) ; puis bientôt la promesse s'accomplit ; Dieu s'approche ; et, se tournant vers Sion en ruines, les sentinelles proclament le salut avec un chant de triomphe. Comparez la sentinelle qui attend et publie la chute de Babylone, 21.6 et suivants.

Le retour de l'Eternel en Sion. On pourrait aussi traduire : que l'Eternel ramène Sion. Mais c'est de la venue de Dieu lui-même qu'il s'agit avant tout dans ce passage (versets 6, 7, 10). Le retour des exilés sera indiqué plus loin (versets 11 et 12).
