On peut, en admettant une inversion semblable à celle de Jean 13.34, construire ce verset comme suit : "Afin que tous ils soient un ; afin qu'eux aussi soient (un) en nous, comme toi, Père, tu es en moi et moi en toi..." (de Wette, Luthardt, Godet).

Dans ce cas le retranchement du mot un, dans la seconde proposition (B, C, D, Itala), se justifie tout à fait.

Le grand objet de la prière de Jésus pour son Eglise, c'est l'union de tous ses membres dans la communion du Père et du Fils. (versets 21-23)

Cette union qu'il avait déjà demandée spécialement pour ses disciples, (verset 11) il prie Dieu de la réaliser dans tous ses enfants ; ceux-ci doivent être un comme le Père et le Fils sont un, ils doivent être tous ensemble unis à Christ, et par lui à Dieu. De là, ce mot profond : un en nous, qui élève tous les rachetés jusqu'à la gloire éternelle que Jésus leur a acquise. (versets 22,24)

- Cette partie de la prière du Sauveur nous révèle la nature de son Eglise. Il est venu pour unir, en les réconciliant avec Dieu les âmes que le péché avait divisées.

Le lien de cette union est le même que celui qui fait l'ineffable harmonie du Père et du Fils : Comme toi, Père, tu es en moi et moi en toi.

Mais cette union, fondée sur la communion avec Dieu par Christ, ne doit pas et ne peut pas rester invisible ; elle se manifeste nécessairement au dehors, et c'est précisément cette sainte union des âmes, dans la foi et l'amour, qui doit être pour le monde lui-même un éclatant témoignage que Jésus est l'envoyé de Dieu.

C'est par elle surtout que les âmes sont attirées au Sauveur et croient en lui. Elle fut, en effet, dès les premiers âges de l'Eglise, le plus puissant moyen de persuasion pour le monde. (Actes 2.46,47 ; 4.32,33 ; 5.11-14, etc.)

Aussi les exhortations à maintenir cette union des âmes dans l'amour, qui remplissent les écrits de Jean, reviennent elles également souvent sous la plume de l'apôtre Paul. (Romains 12.4-6 ; 1Corinthiens 12.12 et suivants, Ephésiens 4.1-6 ; Philippiens 2.1-5)
