3.6-6.30 Appels à la conversion.

Le commencement de ce morceau est marqué dans le texte par le titre, 3.6, et la fin, par le titre du morceau suivant, 7.1. Il comprend une série d'allocutions du temps du roi Josias, qui annoncent au peuple de Juda les châtiments terribles qui vont le frapper et qu'une conversion sincère pourrait seule détourner. Le prophète compare d'abord la conduite de Juda à celle du peuple des dix-tribus, déjà frappé par la justice de Dieu, et il annonce le relèvement final de tous les deux (3.6-4.2). Puis il déclare plus expressément que Juda doit être frappé d'une destruction à laquelle n'échappera qu'une faible partie du peuple (4.3-6.30).

3.6-4.2 Juda la perfide et Israël l'infidèle.

  • Juda est plus coupable encore qu'Israël, versets 6 à 10
  • Il y a au point de vue de la justice encore moins de chances de relèvement pour lui que pour Israël, versets 11 à 17
  • Israël et Juda reviendront un jour à Jérusalem, et confesseront leurs péchés, versets 18 à 25
  • à la conversion d'Israël s'ajoutera celle des païens eux-mêmes, 4.1-2.

6 et 7 Les deux épithètes, l'infidèle et la perfide, s'attachent à Israël et à Juda comme des surnoms ; c'est ce que nous avons cherché à rendre dans la traduction. Ces deux fractions du peuple de Dieu sont comparées à deux sœurs mariées qui ont manqué à leurs devoirs chacune à sa manière.

Infidèle : littéralement : celle qui s'est détournée ; elle a déserté le domicile conjugal.

Si nous remarquons les « crimes » commis par ceux qui abandonnent la piété, avec toutes les conséquences que cela peut entraîner, nous serons alors convaincus qu'il faut éviter d'emprunter de telles voies.

Il n'y a rien de pire que d'être trouvé plus fautif que ceux qui ont réellement péri dans leurs péchés ; ce sera un bien piètre réconfort, lors du châtiment éternel, de pouvoir contempler ceux qui auront eu une conduite pire que la nôtre !
