L'apostrophe : désole-toi ! est adressée à la terre d'Israël (verset 6) que le prophète identifie avec le peuple de Dieu (comparez Jérémie 31.4 et d'autres).

Une vierge : vierge, soit dans le sens de fiancée, soit désignant ici une très jeune femme qui perd son mari dès les premiers jours après le mariage.

Tous ceux qui travaillent uniquement en vue de gains périssables, en éprouveront, tôt ou tard de la honte. Après avoir ressenti le bonheur intense que peuvent procurer les délices des sens, leur joie sera vite flétrie ; la joie spirituelle, par contre, est éternelle.

Notez comme les choses périssables et incertaines nous attirent ! Regardez à quel point nous avons besoin de vivre en continuelle dépendance divine, sous la Providence. Observez la ruine qu'apportent les œuvres du péché. Jusqu'à ce que la pauvreté occasionne le retour à la piété et l'accès à la religion, le peuple subit pour l'instant, un jugement relativement sévère. Bénis soient les jugements de Dieu, ils font vibrer le cœur du peuple en l'attirant à Christ et Son salut !
