Beaucoup possèdent de nombreuses qualités, parfaitement appréciables, cependant, ils périssent parce qu'il leur en manque une, comme ce chef du peuple, qui ne pouvait pas supporter les paroles de Christ, parce qu’il devait choisir entre Jésus et lui-même.

Beaucoup de personnes, peu disposées à suivre Christ, finissent par L’abandonner. Après une longue lutte entre leurs pieuses convictions et leurs corruptions, ce sont ces dernières qui prennent le dessus : ces âmes regrettent de ne pas pouvoir servir les deux ; si elles doivent faire un choix pour décider de ce qui doit être abandonné, ce sera Dieu et non les attraits du monde...

Leur choix entre obéissance à Dieu, ou au monde, se reconnaîtra par leur témoignage extérieur : l'amour du monde, sous une forme ou une autre, se trouve toujours enraciné dans le cœur des hommes. Ces derniers peuvent très facilement parler de ce qu'ils ont laissé et perdu ici-bas, plutôt que de ce qu'ils ont fait ou souffert pour Christ, comme le fit l’apôtre Pierre, en Le reniant... Nous devrions plutôt éprouver de la honte pour ne pas avoir témoigné du Seigneur.
