Osée 2.19

19 et 20 Nouvelles fiançailles d'Israël.

Je te fiancerai à moi... : répété trois fois pour donner à la promesse le caractère d'une entière certitude.

Toute la relation de Dieu avec Israël recommence à nouveau (Ezéchiel chapitre 16). Quel contraste entre cette image des fiançailles qui ne réveille que des idées pures, et l'état d'Israël tel qu'il avait été représenté par l'image du chapitre 1 ! Il ne reste absolument rien du souvenir des fautes passées.

A jamais... Ce lien contracté à nouveau ne sera plus fragile comme l'avait été l'union précédente.

En justice et en jugement, en grâce et en tendresse. Le troisième de ces quatre termes répond au premier, comme le quatrième au second. Dieu fait d'Israël sa fiancée en le plaçant d'abord sous la discipline sévère de la justice et du jugement. La justice condamne tout ce qui s'est trouvé en lui de mauvais ; le jugement est le creuset du châtiment par où doit passer la femme coupable pour en sortir repentante et purifiée. A la justice correspond la grâce qui substitue l'absolution à la condamnation. Au jugement correspond la tendresse, littéralement les compassions ; ce sont les entrailles de la tendresse divine qui s'émeuvent envers sa fiancée réhabilitée pour la combler de biens. C'est par cette double école de la sévérité et de la bonté que Dieu regagne le cœur d'Israël et en fait de nouveau sa chaste fiancée.

En toute bonne foi : en toute vérité des deux parts, ce qui n'avait pas été le cas, de la part d'Israël, dans les fiançailles précédentes.

Et tu connaîtras l'Eternel... Mot sublime, désignant l'union la plus intime du peuple avec Dieu à la suite de la conversion décrite dans les versets précédents.
