11 à 15 La grâce de Dieu salutaire à tous les hommes.

Les belles paroles qui suivent ici les exhortations de l'apôtre en indiquent le motif tout-puissant, et c'est pourquoi il les lie à ce qui précède par cette particule causative, car.

En effet, la manifestation de la grâce salutaire de Dieu, de cette grâce qui renferme et communique le salut, ne peut avoir d'autre but final que la complète sanctification de l'homme pécheur ; et ce but, elle l'atteint par degrés en tous ceux qui la reçoivent avec sincérité ; car elle ne montre pas seulement ce but, elle ne l'impose pas seulement comme une tâche légale à remplir, mais elle le fait aimer, et par là même elle donne la force d'y parvenir. En disant que cette grâce est salutaire à tous les hommes, l'apôtre ne fait que répéter, en d'autres termes, ce qu'il a déjà clairement enseigné ailleurs, (1Timothée 2.4 ; 4.10) c'est-à-dire que, dans l'intention de Dieu, sa grâce peut s'étendre à tous, et que l'œuvre de rédemption qui nous l'a acquise est suffisante pour tous.

Ou bien, par ces paroles, l'apôtre voulait-il simplement exprimer une autre pensée qui lui est familière, savoir que la grâce de Dieu destine le salut, non seulement aux Juifs, mais à tous les peuples indistinctement, et faudrait-il y voir une déclaration contre le particularisme judaïsant, que les faux docteurs cherchaient à relever dans les Eglises ? C'est possible.

Et l'on exprimerait mieux encore cette pensée, si l'on traduisait ainsi ce verset : "La grâce salutaire de Dieu est apparue à tous les hommes," par la venue du Sauveur dans le monde et par la prédication de son Evangile, qui soit s'étendre à tous. Ce sens est adopté par plusieurs versions (Vulgate, la Bible anglaise, allemande, etc.)

La doctrine de la Grâce et du salut par l'Évangile, est destinée à tous les hommes, de tous rangs et de toutes conditions sociales. Elle enseigne à abandonner le péché, à y renoncer définitivement.

Une conversation déplacée ne convient pas aux chrétiens, vu leur « vocation » céleste. L’exercice de la piété nous enseigne à prendre conscience de ce qui est bon. Nous devons regarder à Dieu, par le biais de Christ, car Il est l'objet de notre espérance et de notre adoration. Une conversation digne de l’Évangile doit être digne de la piété qui nous anime.

La considération de notre devoir tient en peu de mots : renoncer à l'apostasie et aux convoitises mondaines, vivre sobrement, en toute droiture, dans la piété, en dépit de tous les pièges, des tentations, des corruptions, et de tous les obstacles qui favorisent le péché dans le cœur du croyant. Cette doctrine nous enseigne à regarder vers la gloire divine, dans les cieux. Dès que Christ sera de retour ici-bas, le bonheur des chrétiens sera alors complet, il les conduira vers une sainteté parfaite et la félicité ; telle était la finalité de la mort de Christ. Ce grand Dieu et notre Messie, descendu ici-bas pou nous sauver, a revêtu la nature humaine, dans sa divinité. Il nous a aimés et s'est livré Lui-même pour nous ; que pouvons-nous faire de mieux que de L'aimer et de nous placer à Son service ?

La rédemption du péché et la sanctification de notre propre nature vont de pair, elles font de nous un « peuple à part », pour Dieu, libéré de toute culpabilité et de toute condamnation, purifié par le Saint Esprit. Toute Écriture est utile. Elle est la « source » du bon accomplissement, de notre devoir, en toute droiture.

Puissions-nous nous interroger pour savoir si nous sommes entièrement dépendants de la Grâce, Celle qui sauve les perdus, pardonne leur culpabilité et sanctifie leur impureté. Plus nous nous éloignerons de la vanité et des glorioles des œuvres vaines, plus nous nous glorifierons en Christ, en Lui seul, et plus nous serons zélés pour abonder dans l’exercice de Sa volonté !
