Psaumes 69.23,24. Pour le psalmiste, l'image de la table qui devient un filet, etc., signifiait qu'à une situation prospère pleine de jouissances matérielles se substituent le malheur et la ruine.

Pour Paul la table figure la sécurité puisée dans les œuvres de la propre justice ; le filet, etc., l'orgueil et l'endurcissement moral avec leurs funestes conséquences pour le salut.

Des termes destinés à représenter le châtiment, le premier signifie filet, lacs ; le second, que Paul introduit dans la citation de Psaumes 69 en l'empruntant au Psaumes 35.8 (version des Septante), désigne la chasse, puis tout moyen employé pour chasser : ici le piège du chasseur.

Il faut remarquer encore que Paul renverse l'ordre des deux derniers termes qui, dans l'hébreu et dans les Septante, se suivent ainsi : une rétribution et une occasion de chute (grec un scandale, tout moyen de faire tomber).

En réservant le mot rétribution pour la fin, Paul accentue l'idée que la ruine des Juifs est le châtiment de leur obstination à chercher le salut dans les voies de la propre justice. Le verset
