Je retrancherai d'Ephraïm. L'Eternel, par le moyen du Messie, commencera par se former un peuple d'enfants de paix, du sein duquel la force brutale sera bannie. Puis, il travaillera à étendre ce règne de paix à la terre entière. C'est ainsi qu'au Psaume 110 David avait déjà contemplé le Messie faisant la conquête du monde au moyen d'une armée de sacrificateurs, partant de Sion et parcourant la terre dans une sainte pompe (Psaumes 110.2-3).

Comme il s'agit d'Israël restauré et purifié, les restes d'Ephraïm en font partie aussi bien que Juda, et cette expression ne peut, par conséquent, rien prouver en faveur de la composition de cette prophétie avant la destruction du royaume de Samarie.

Il parlera de paix. On a entendu ces mots en ce sens : Il commandera la paix, il interdira les hostilités ; mais le mot parler ne peut guère avoir ce sens et signifie plutôt qu'il gagnera par ses paroles les peuples à la paix. Esaïe 9.5 et Michée 5.4, avaient déjà caractérisé le Messie comme roi de paix.

Du fleuve jusqu'aux extrémités... Cette expression paraît tirée de Psaumes 72.8. Elle est assez obscure. Si l'on veut y trouver l'indication des quatre points cardinaux, il faut voir dans les deux mers les limites occidentale et orientale car les anciens se représentaient la terre comme entourée d'eau. Le fleuve, l'Euphrate, représenterait ici la limite septentrionale, et les extrémités de la terre, les pays méridionaux. Mais l'on peut comprendre aussi d'une autre manière. Comme le royaume de Salomon était borné à l'occident par la Méditerranée et à l'orient par l'Euphrate, on peut partir de ces deux limites, de la première pour aller toujours plus à l'occident jusqu'à ce qu'on rencontre la seconde mer qui baigne les terres occidentales (l'Océan Atlantique), et du fleuve (l'Euphrate) pour aller du côté de l'orient jusqu'à l'extrémité du continent de l'Asie.

Il est évident que l'accomplissement de cette prophétie embrasse toute la fin des temps, depuis la venue du Messie jusqu'à sa complète domination sur la terre. Israël a été conservé en quelque sorte miraculeusement, avant et après cette venue, avant, pour que le Messie pût naître dans son sein, et après, pour qu'il puisse avoir part, lui aussi, à la promesse qui lui avait été faite si spécialement. S'il en est privé, maintenant, c'est par sa faute. Les promesses de Dieu sont conditionnelles, et ce n'est pas pour rien qu'il avait dit à son peuple, dans la prophétie précédente : Mais aimez la vérité et la paix !
