J'ai craint le peuple. C'est la vérité, mais elle l'accuse au lieu de le justifier.

Il y avait plusieurs signes d'hypocrisie dans le repentir de Saül : - Il implora uniquement Samuel, et semblait se préoccuper de son avis, et de gagner sa faveur. - Il tenta de se disculper, même en admettant sa faute, ce qui n'est jamais la voie de la vraie repentance. - Tous ses efforts tendaient à sauver sa réputation, et à préserver son intérêt à régner sur le peuple.

Les hommes sont inconstants et changent souvent d'avis, ce qui ne peut que les affaiblir et leur faire manquer leurs objectifs : c'est alors que l'imprévisible se produit, contrecarrant tous leurs plans. Mais la marche avec Dieu ne va pas dans ce sens : la « Force d'Israël » (l'Éternel) ne faillira jamais !
