"Pourquoi donc s'étonner de voir accomplir ce qui a été prédit par le Saint-Esprit même ? Le christianisme (la vie chrétienne) est-il autre chose que la participation et l'accomplissement des mystères de Jésus-Christ, souffrant sur la terre et mourant sur la croix ? Le combat que la chair livre à l'esprit, la mortification que l'esprit fait souffrir à la chair, la violence évangélique, (Matthieu 11.12) le renoncement continuel à soi-même, le support des contradictions, les calomnies, les calamités, etc.., sont autant de persécutions inévitables à tout chrétien. Qui ne souffre rien en son propre corps ne doit pas manquer de souffrir dans celui de l'Eglise persécutée en tant de lieux, s'il l'aime, et est sensible à ses maux." Quesnel.

- L'enfant de Dieu ne doit point rechercher la persécution, ni la provoquer par sa faute ; mais puisqu'il n'y a rien de changé dans ces deux puissances qui se trouvent toujours en présence comme deux adversaires : le monde et la vérité, les témoins de cette vérité doivent fortement suspecter leur fidélité, quand ils n'ont rien à souffrir de la part du monde.
