D'après Strabon, le conquérant se nommait dans l'origine Agradatès ; il ne prit que plus tard le surnom de Cyrus. Voir encore sur ce nom l'inroduction aux chapitres 40 à 66.Mon berger : pour rassembler et ramener en Canaan Israël dispersé. Cette prédiction nominative de Cyrus n'a sa pareille que dans celle relative à Josias (1Rois 13.2) et ne peut s'expliquer que par l'importance exceptionnelle de la mission que Dieu réservait à ce monarque et dont, au dire unanime de l'antiquité, il fut digne par ses vertus. En relevant Israël de son profond abaissement, il fut comme un Messie anticipé et prépara l'extension du règne de Dieu chez les gentils. Son nom, prononcé d'avance par la prophétie, dut être, lorsque ses premières victoires le rendirent célèbre, un signe pour Israël captif, en même temps que le moyen de disposer Cyrus lui-même à libérer le peuple de Dieu. On ne comprendrait guères, en effet, sans une influence de ce genre, qu'un de ses premiers soins, après avoir pris Babylone, eût été de renvoyer ce peuple en Palestine. Le récit de Josèphe (Antiquités XI, 1, 2) n'a donc rien que de vraisemblable ; comparez Esdras 1.2. Cette prédiction nominative de Cyrus n'a sa pareille que dans celle relative à Josias (1Rois 13.2) et ne peut s'expliquer que par l'importance exceptionnelle de la mission que Dieu réservait à ce monarque et dont, au dire unanime de l'antiquité, il fut digne par ses vertus. En relevant Israël de son profond abaissement, il fut comme un Messie anticipé et prépara l'extension du règne de Dieu chez les gentils. Son nom, prononcé d'avance par la prophétie, dut être, lorsque ses premières victoires le rendirent célèbre, un signe pour Israël captif, en même temps que le moyen de disposer Cyrus lui-même à libérer le peuple de Dieu. On ne comprendrait guères, en effet, sans une influence de ce genre, qu'un de ses premiers soins, après avoir pris Babylone, eût été de renvoyer ce peuple en Palestine.
