21-24 Interrogatoire d'Aaron

Après que le peuple a subi son humiliation, Aaron est aussi appelé à rendre compte. En consentant à la demande du peuple, il s'est conduit envers lui comme s'il eût été son plus implacable ennemi.

Jamais un homme sage n'a répondu comme Aaron, de manière si frivole et désinvolte. Soyons vigilants à ne pas nous laisser entraîner, soit par les hommes, soit par les évènements, dans les voies du péché ; les individus ne peuvent que tenter à nous diriger vers cette voie, ils ne peuvent pas nous y forcer. L'arrivée de Moïse dans le camp, fit changer l'atmosphère : là où l'on dansait, maintenant on tremblait. Les hébreux avaient honte de leur péché. La manière qu'utilisa Moïse pour étayer ses reproches, consista à ne pas contrecarrer ou à maquiller le péché, mais à le punir directement. Les Lévites furent là, pour tuer les meneurs de cette rébellion ; seuls ceux qui manifestèrent ouvertement leur état inique furent tués.

Ceux qui persistent à marcher dans le péché, courent à leur ruine : les Hébreux, qui le matin criaient et dansaient, sont morts avant le soir même. De tels changements radicaux, arrivent parfois par les jugements de l'Éternel : ils fondent sur les pécheurs qui se croient en toute sécurité et sérénité.
