Ezéchiel 7.27

Le Roi mènera deuil, les principaux se vêtiront de désolation, et les mains du peuple du pays tomberont de frayeur ; je les traiterai selon leur voie, et je les jugerai selon qu'ils l'auront mérité ; et ils sauront que je suis l'Eternel.

Et ainsi la nation tout entière sera réduite au désespoir et n'aura plus qu'à attendre le coup fatal, salaire de ses fautes. L'ensemble de la nation est désigné par le roi, le prince, qui sont ici les chefs de famille, et la masse du peuple.

Ils sauront. Ce refrain, qui revient à plusieurs reprises, diversement modifié, dans ces discours, a dans ce contexte un caractère plutôt menaçant (comme 6.10) que réjouissant (comme 6.7). Ces incrédules reconnaîtront, mais trop tard, que c'était le Tout-Puissant qui les avait avertis. Cependant cette reconnaissance tardive elle-même pourra les conduire encore à une repentance et à une conversion véritables.
