Et Dieu bénit le septième jour et le sanctifia. Bénir, quand il s'agit de Dieu, n'est pas seulement prononcer des paroles bienveillantes; c'est rendre prospère, fort, heureux. Le septième jour apparaît ainsi comme plus particulièrement rempli de forces et de joies célestes. Par là même, il se trouve sanctifié, c'est-à-dire mis à part pour une destination sainte, ce qui naturellement ne s'applique pas seulement à ce sabbat divin, mais aussi à tous les sabbats humains qui se suivront de semaine en semaine : ce sont tous les septièmes jours des hommes qui sont bénis et consacrés dans le septième jour de Dieu.

L'homme aussi, au jour de son sabbat, contemple l'œuvre divine, et il participe à la joie de Dieu. Heureux, s'il peut se réjouir aussi en contemplant sa propre œuvre de la semaine, ou si, ne le pouvant, il profite de ce jour pour s'en humilier ! Aussi, dans le quatrième commandement, Moïse rappelle-t-il le devoir fondé sur cette parole de Dieu, de ne pas confondre ce jour avec tous les autres : Souviens-toi du jour du repos pour le sanctifier.

Ce mot souvenir ne peut s'entendre dans le sens qu'on lui donne parfois : N'oublie pas de garder le jour que je consacre aujourd'hui, car le motif indiqué est tiré expressément de notre récit.

La répétition dans ces trois versets des mots : l'œuvre qu'il avait faite, rappelle à l'homme que, pour être béni, le sabbat doit être précédé du travail de la semaine. Le travail de la semaine doit être complet, comme celui de Dieu, pour que l'homme ait le droit de cesser d'agir et de célébrer le sabbat. (Exode 20.9)

Ces sabbats périodiques sont autant de jalons destinés à conduire l'homme au repos parfait et éternel en Dieu, dont ils sont comme une anticipation (Hébreux 4.9).

Dans la nouvelle alliance, le sabbat a été transporté du septième au premier jour de la semaine. Ce changement a pu avoir lieu parce qu'une nouvelle création est intervenue en Jésus-Christ ; la proportion d'un jour sur sept a cependant été maintenue, parce que l'ancienne création subsiste encore et dans la nature et chez le chrétien lui-même à côté de la nouvelle, celle-ci étant restreinte pour le moment à l'ordre spirituel.

L'auteur s'est-il représenté ce septième jour comme se terminant ainsi que les précédents ? Il ne dit pas : il y eut un soir, comme pour les autres jours ; il ne parle pas non plus d'un huitième jour ; et comme l'essence de ce jour est que Dieu cesse de créer quelque chose de nouveau, et que l'état des choses fondé alors dure encore, nous sommes amenés à penser qu'aux yeux de l'auteur et quant à ce qui concerne l'œuvre de la nature, le repos du septième jour dure encore ; il ne cessera que lorsque Dieu fera paraître de nouveaux cieux et une nouvelle terre.

S'il en est ainsi, il est impossible de ne pas tirer de ce fait une conclusion rétrospective sur le sens qu'il attachait aux six premiers jours.

Créée pour la faire. L'expression hébraïque que nous traduisons ainsi a causé de grands embarras aux interprètes et aux traducteurs qui l'ont rendue chacun à leur manière :
Les Septante : qu'il avait commencé à faire ;
Ostervald : créée pour être faite ;
Ostervald révisé : pour l'accomplissement de laquelle Dieu avait créé ;
Perret-Gentil : créé en agissant ;
Second et Lausanne : créée en la faisant ;
Reuss : il avait cessé l'œuvre de sa création.

Notre traduction, qui était déjà celle de la Vulgate, est littérale et nous semble préférable à toutes celles que nous venons d'indiquer. L'acte de créer mentionné ici est celui de 1.1, par lequel Dieu avait posé la matière ; et celui de faire se rapporte à l'arrangement qu'il lui avait donné par le travail des six jours.

En créant la matière, Dieu avait pour but d'en faire un monde. Rien ne montre mieux que cette distinction entre créer et faire, le sens absolu que l'auteur attache au premier de ces termes : faire sortir la matière du néant.

On a contesté l'institution primitive du sabbat par Dieu lui-même, en s'appuyant sur le fait que l'histoire des patriarches ne présente pas de traces du repos du septième jour. Cette objection nous paraît peu décisive ; la Genèse, en effet, ne nous renseigne pas sur tous les détails de la vie des patriarches. Du reste, dans cette histoire même, il nous est parlé à deux reprises de la semaine : à propos de Noé (8.10-12) et de Jacob (29.27).

Dans l'histoire même de Moïse, toute l'ordonnance relative à la manne, qui repose sur l'institution du sabbat. précède la promulgation des dix commandements, et comme nous l'avons déjà remarqué le commandement du sabbat suppose une institution antérieure. Du reste, l'institution de la semaine existait aussi chez d'autres peuples que les Hébreux : les Chaldéens, par exemple, dans les inscriptions desquels on a retrouvé le mot Sabattuv. Seulement ce mot ne désigne pas comme en Israël, un jour béni, mais un jour néfaste dans lequel il n'est pas prudent d'accomplir un travail. C'est ainsi que l'institution primitive s'était travestie sous l'influence du paganisme.
