World English Bible Therefore he is also able to save to the uttermost those who draw near to God through him, seeing that he lives forever to make intercession for them.

Grâce à l'éternité de sa sacrificature, Christ toujours vivant peut sauver parfaitement (grec jusqu'à l'achèvement) ceux qui s'approchent de Dieu par lui, tandis que les autres sacrificateurs étaient tous successivement enlevés par la mort.

- L'auteur met en rapport l'efficace perpétuelle du sacrifice de Christ avec son intercession pour les croyants. (Comparer Romains 8.34, note.)

Non que ce sacrifice accompli une seule fois pour le péché, ne soit parfaitement suffisant pour assurer le pardon et la réconciliation avec Dieu à tout pécheur repentant, mais l'intercession du Sauveur auprès de Dieu, fondée sur les mérites mêmes de son sacrifice nous obtient pour chaque péché particulier le pardon et la grâce qui régénère.

Il ne me suffit pas de croire d'une manière générale que le Sauveur est mort pour les péchés du monde. Pour me rendre la paix lorsque je l'invoque dans mon angoisse, il faut que Dieu, par un acte toujours renouvelé de sa miséricorde, m'accorde personnellement le pardon que je lui demande. Or, quel privilège de savoir que, tandis que je crie à lui du sein de ma misère, j'ai près du trône de la grâce un Avocat qui plaide ma cause, (1Jean 2.1) en faisant valoir en ma faveur tous ses mérites infinis !

L'épître aux Hébreux présente fréquemment cette précieuse grâce sous l'image du souverain sacrificateur, qui offrait d'abord le sacrifice pour le péché, puis entrait dans le lieu très saint avec le sang de la victime qu'il répandait sur le propitiatoire. C'est ce dernier acte qui symbolisait l'intercession du grand souverain Sacrificateur. (Hébreux 7.26 ; 4.14, note ; Hébreux 9.12, note.)
