Hors du camp (Nombres 5.2 ; 12.10 ; 2Rois 15.5 ; 7.3). Car il souillerait quiconque viendrait à le toucher. La tradition prétend même que toute maison où il entrait était souillée avec tout ce s'y trouvait. Encore maintenant, en Orient les lépreux sont confinés en dehors des villes et des villages et habitent des demeures spéciales, souvent de misérables buttes où on leur apporte leur nourriture. A Jérusalem il y a près de la porte de Sion un lieu assigné aux lépreux. Chez les Perses aussi le lépreux était mis au ban de la société. D'après le Zendavesta, il faut, à la vue d'un lépreux, prononcer une prière spéciale. Un Arabe ne voudrait pas coucher dans le voisinage d'un lépreux, ni manger du même plat que lui. Aucune maladie n'inspire aux peuples de l'Asie une telle horreur.
