Le maître entre avec joie dans la pensée que le serviteur lui suggère par sa remarque : "Il y a encore de la place."

Aussi le charge-t-il d'une troisième invitation ; ce n'est plus dans les places et les rues de la ville (Jérusalem et le peuple juif) qu'il doit la porter, mais au dehors, dans les chemins et le long des haies, à tous ces êtres errants et sans refuge qui vivent sans Dieu et sans espérance au monde.

Ici est clairement prédite et ordonnée la grande vocation des païens, qui sera commencée par les apôtres et ne cessera plus jusqu'au dernier jour, où la maison du Maître sera remplie !

- Quel ardent amour de Dieu, pour les pécheurs qu'il veut sauver, s'exprime dans ce mot : et presse d'entrer (grec contrains, fais-en une nécessité absolue).

Il s'agit d'une contrainte toute morale, qui ne diminue en rien la liberté, puisque rien n'est plus libre que la foi, l'obéissance, l'amour. Cette contrainte s'exerce sur les consciences par la sainteté de la loi, sur les cœurs par la puissance de l'amour divin, sur la volonté par l'action de l'Esprit de Dieu.

"Dieu ne force personne, mais il fait qu'on veut" Gaussen.

- Qui aurait pu croire que jamais on chercherait dans ces paroles une légitimation de l'horrible contrainte par le fer et le feu !
