Ainsi donc, vous, mes disciples, vous devez vous attendre à I'opposition, à la lutte.

- Sans aucun doute Jésus est venu apporter la paix sur la terre, (Luc 2.14 ; Jean 14 ; 27 ; Ephésiens 2.14 ; 18) mais une paix que précède le combat, l'épée.

Pourquoi ? La sainte vérité qu'il proclame vient se heurter au mensonge à la corruption, à l'inimitié qui règnent sur cette terre. De là, la division pénétrant jusqu'au sein de la famille, entre ceux qui veulent obéir à Jésus-Christ et ceux qui le rejettent. (Comparer Michée 7.6, d'où Jésus emprunte les paroles du verset 35.)

Tel est partout et toujours le premier effet d'une prédication puissante de l'Evangile. Jésus dit, d'après le terme original : "Qu'il n'est pas venu jeter, introduire brusquement, la paix, mais l'épée."

Il n'y a ni paradoxe ni figure de rhétorique dans cette parole, elle dépeint l'effet premier, actuel de l'Evangile qui est le trouble, la division, mais elle donne à entendre aussi qu'après ces luttes inévitables viendra la paix, fin dernière de la venue du Sauveur.
