Le mot hébreu que nous rendons par mois signifie proprement renouvellement (de la lune). La législation sacerdotale (10.10) fait seule mention de ces fêtes, passées sous silence dans le Livre de l'alliance (Exode 23.1-33), dans le Deutéronome et dans Lévitique 23.1-44. Comme il est parfaitement certain que les nouvelles lunes appartiennent aux cérémonies les plus anciennes du culte israélite, (voir leur mention Amos 8.5 ; Osée 2.11 ; Esaïe 1.13 ; 1Samuel 20.5 ; 2Rois 4.23), l'on doit conclure que le code sacerdotal nous donne les renseignements les plus complets sur les anciens rites religieux des Israélites. Il est probable que la célébration des nouvelles lunes était un ancien usage que la loi a sanctionné et qu'elle a complété en y ajoutant un sacrifice solennel.Deux jeunes taureaux, etc. : holocauste plus considérable que celui des jours ordinaires et des sabbats ; équivalant à celui qu'on offrait pendant les jours des pains sans levain et au jour de la Pentecôte. L'obligation de se consacrer à Dieu était par là rappelée aux Israélites à l'entrée de chaque mois.
