Les flèches..., les charbons... C'est ici la double réponse à la double question du verset précédent : Que donnera-t-il, qu'ajoutera-t-il ? Tel péché, tel châtiment. La langue est comparée parfois à une flèche (Psaumes 64.4), parfois à un feu (Proverbes 16.27) ; la langue trompeuse perce, elle sera percée ; elle brûle, elle sera brûlée. Les anciens jetaient sur les villes assiégées, pour les incendier, des flèches chargées de braises. Comparez Ephésiens 6.16, la mention des traits enflammés du malin.
